May's wet weather allowed for soar in deliveries
The UK’s largest restaurant groups achieved their biggest year-on-year growth this May in delivery sales for 2024
Deliveries in May were 11.3% ahead of the same month in 2023 on a like-for-like basis, says CGA by NIQ's latest hospitality tracker.
The soar in deliveries follows an unseasonally cool and damp weather across the UK for most of May. This led to consumers ordering food in rather than going out.
However, takeaway and click-and-collect sales were down 2% as people preffered the use of delivery platforms instead.
A positive summer
The latest hospitality figures show that combined delivery and takeaway sales were 6.2% ahead, an improvement on April's figure of 4.5%.
Restaurants' at home sales have now been up year-on-year for 12 consecutive months, with May falling well above the current rate of inflation.
The tracker indicates that deliveries accounted for just under 11 pence in every pound spent at restaurants in May, while takeaways covered four pence. Food took 91.1% share of all at-home orders, while drinks held 8.9%.
The hospitality industry is positive for more growth as the summer of sports begins.
