Feature: A steak in the title

We interview Street Food Championships winner, Todd Turner from Bigmouths Kitchen to see how the past year as the winner has treated him

OOH: Why do you think competitions, like the Street Food Championships, are important for the industry?
Bigmouths Kitchen (BMK): Competitions like the Street Food Championships provide a platform for Street Food businesses to show what they are capable of. It provides an opportunity to push themselves creatively, showcase their innovation, presentation skills, and highlight the exciting, bold flavours that street food is all about.

OOH: Did you expect to win Street Food Dish of the Year?
BMK: Not really, there were so many amazing vendors at the competition!

OOH: Since November, when we last saw you, what has changed for you and the brand?
BMK: Winning the competition gave us something to really shout about! Since November people have really started to recognise and connect with the brand. The win gave us a real sense of validation — proof in the pudding, that what we’re doing resonates with people and stands out in the industry. It’s opened up new opportunities and added real momentum to what we’re building.

OOH: How has winning the Street Food Championships changed things for you and the team? Have you guys opened any new sites? Are you in any new locations?
BMK: Winning the Street Food Championships has been a big confidence boost for the team. It’s validated the hard work we’ve put in and shown us that we’re on the right track. Since the win, we’ve moved to a new, larger location to support our growth, and we’re exploring the possibility of opening additional sites in the near future.

OOH: Is your award-winning dish still on the menu?
BMK: Of course!

OOH: What do you think makes the perfect burger?
BMK: For us, it’s more than just flavour — though that’s obviously important! The perfect burger is all about the experience. Food is incredibly nostalgic, and we love adding little touches to our menu that spark memories from childhood or take people back to a happy place. That’s what makes it fun and memorable. It’s about creating something that tastes amazing and makes people feel something.

OOH: What went wrong on the day of the competition?
BMK: I definitely got a bit lost in the overall experience! With so much going on, I lost track of time a little — but managed to pull it back! It was one of those high-pressure moments where you have to think on your feet, and thankfully, it all came together in the end!

OOH: What would you say to competitors this year?
BMK:
Just go for it! You never know, you might win!

OOH: What makes the street food industry different?
BMK:
The way everyone is willing to connect, help each other out, times are tough but everyone is in the same boat and willing to talk about it. It’s the sense of community. Everyone’s so willing to connect, share advice, and help each other out. Times can be tough, but there’s a real understanding that we’re all in the same boat — and that makes people more open, supportive and genuine.
