Following their highly successful launch back in January, the National Breakfast Awards, which are organised by OOH magazine, will return in 2019. Held on 30th January 2019 at Westminster Kingsway College, the event will once again give operators the opportunity to compete in a cook-off, with £1,000 and a number of different awards up for grabs!
Determined to cast the net as far and wide as possible in order to promote Britain’s best breakfasts, the competition is open to entrants from cafés, coffee shops, quick service restaurants, food-to-go establishments, casual dining restaurants, pubs and hotels. The 16 talented finalists who are chosen will serve up their speciality dishes in the Signature Round, before preparing a further one using supplied ingredients in the Technical Round.
New for this year, they will also compete in the Bloody Mary Challenge. Testing the contestants’ beverage-blending skills, it’s sure to add a kick to proceedings!
Last year, the main prize of Breakfast of the Year, plus £1,000, went to Kevin Geyton of the Brigands Inn in Machynlleth, Wales. He cooked up a delicious plate of poached, organic, locally sourced rare breed eggs on toasted homemade sourdough, topped with crushed avocado, bacon, black pudding, chorizo and Welsh rarebit.
Geyton said: “It was great to meet and share ideas with other people who were all at the top of their game. When I heard my name, it was like winning the FA Cup, as I have never even won a raffle before!”
OOH editor Henry Norman added: “Kevin and our other two winners, Steve Bell and Kirsten Gilmour, both representing café outlets, set such a high bar in January, but we are confident we can take it to another level this time. If you think you’ve got what it takes to be crowned champion, please enter and I and the other judges very much look forward to tasting what you come up with.”
