Wimpy cuts calories

Wimpy has launched a new summer menu in its 69 UK table service restaurants, offering new lower calorie options and sugar-free fizzy drinks for children. Chicken chunks have been replaced by bigger, lower fat breaded chicken breast strips; thick shakes now have up to 20% less calories; and a new kids’ dessert now features American pancakes and ice cream in place of ice-cream waffles, a saving of 33% calories in every dish.

High calorie, sugary fizzy drinks have also been removed from Wimpy’s kids’ menu and replaced with a choice of four sugar-free fizzy drinks, each with 100 calories and 27g of sugar (the equivalent of almost seven sugar cubes) less than a kids’ size regular Pepsi.

Chris Woolfenden, Wimpy UK general manager, said: “We have always been proud to lead the way in healthy options – we were the first to produce a non-meat healthy eating option in 1985 with the launch of the beanburger – and we continue to develop new menus and dishes with the health and wellbeing of our customers as a top priority. Rest assured, however, that for those who enjoy our heritage meals, these will always be a part of our iconic menus.”

The move comes as the high street chain also unveils a smart new mobile-friendly website, complete with interactive menus, a comprehensive restaurant locator, and a raft of social media functions.
