The purveyors of Britain’s best breakfasts have been crowned after a highly competitive cook-off and awards ceremony were held in West London. The National Breakfast Awards, which took place at Westminster Kingsway College on 30th January, saw 14 finalists from four different sectors – cafés, restaurants, pubs and hotels – going head-to-head across three challenging rounds.
Kevin Geyton, from The Brigands Inn in Machynlleth, North Wales, claimed the top title of National Breakfast of the Year after his signature dish – poached, organic, locally sourced rare bread eggs on toasted homemade sourdough, topped with crushed avocado, bacon, black pudding, chorizo and Welsh rarebit – was the unanimous choice of the panel of expert judges. Along with the prestigious title, he also walked away with £1,000.
Steve Bell, from the Yellow Bicycle Café in Blandford Forum, won Breakfast Chef of the Year, meanwhile, for his technical dish of chorizo on eggy bread with kale and hollandaise sauce; while Kirsten Gilmour, from The Mountain Cafe in Aviemore, Scotland, claimed Smoothie of the Year for her creation, which included oats, desiccated coconut and lime juice.
Geyton said: “I’ve never won anything before in my life, so this is an absolute joy! It’s amazing to cook alongside and meet all the other contestants. You get to see how creative they are and you can incorporate some of their ideas into your own dishes. Everyone has been so friendly.
“The people in North Wales will be thrilled. We’re not from the area but we have fallen in love with it. I’m sure winning this award will do our business well.”
Henry Norman, editor of Out of Home magazine, who organised the event, said: “Breakfast and brunch have become such a huge opportunity for operators in recent years and we wanted to reflect this in our inaugural event. Our finalists certainly stepped up to the plate and the judges were really impressed with the standard of their dishes and the innovation and creativity on display.
“Our hearty congratulations to all of the finalists and, of course, to our worthy winners. The event was a great success and we look forward to holding it again next year.”
